Passionate homemade songs & compositions mostly roots music
Here are some pencil drawings I have done in my sketch books, large and small, that feature portraits and places.
My favorite record of the year in 2011 was Paul Simon’s, So Beautiful, So What. This drawing was done from a photo from his tour.
Booker T. Jones
One of my favorite American musicians and producers is Booker T. Jones. I liked the hat he was wearing in the photo I drew this from. I had just gotten a similar hat in Los Angeles with my good friend and fashion consultant, Karen Davis.
I drew this from a cover of one of her books, Conversations With Maya Angelou. An amazing writer and spirit.
Melia Kemp at the piano.
This a drawing of my daughter, Melia, at the piano. It was done from a photo I took at my studio in Maryland. She is now a nurse but is also a gifted musician.
Dave Way, Denny Weston Jr., Dillon O'Brian and Craig Eastman
This drawing comes from a photo taken in 1978 in Richmond, Virginia where I first met Willie Nelson. He was performing at an amusement park called Kings Dominion. We had played earlier in the park that day with my band, The Paradise Pickers. I’m wearing an Ernie Ball teeshirt. Willie is forty-five and I’m twenty-four.
Three Music Friends
These were drawn from a single photo of three friends that I worked with on a music project back in the late 1990s.
McHenry Street, West Baltimore
This drawing was done in the 1990s when I was living in West Baltimore. It is done from a photo I took at the corner of McHenry and Furrow streets.
This is a drawing from memory of the kitchen in the house where I grew up on Symington Avenue in Baltimore. I have a memory of my grandfather sitting at the breakfast table reading the morning paper, The Baltimore Sun.
